After the Cold War ended, both parties sought to reinvent themselves and, as a consequence, each became more extreme. This, in itself, divided the nation into more polarized politics where our leaders stopped leading and started dictating to Americans how to live, what to think and what to believe. This tends to grate on Americans.

War has tended to unite nations. Example: Trump has done more to unite the Iranians than any previous president. LOL

However, modern weapons have made war both very destruction and very costly. Better would be to have "alien contact" which would not only scare the shit out of a lot of people but also unite humanity on "the pale blue dot".

While I strongly doubt there are space aliens visiting us, I do believe there is evidence of other civilizations through radio astronomy.
