The teacher across the hall from my classroom always keeps his room elaborately decorated. Other teachers come by just to look in at it. Well, this being Christmas time, he strung some colorful Christmas lights around the room. As he was leaving today, he flicked off the room light and it really highlighted the Christmas lights, which I complimented him on. Good thing too, because he had forgotten to unplug the Christmas lights and they would have been on all weekend. Potential fire hazard. As he was leaving - again - he made a comment about calling them "Holiday lights" so as not to offend anyone. We both had a good laugh at that.

When I was a kid the school went all out for Christmas which was not an offensive word in those olden days. There would always be a huge Christmas tree in the entryway lobby and other decorations visible as you entered the school. And the teachers I presume all tried to outdo themselves in decorating classrooms, often with help from the students. It was always great fun and added a great deal to the spirit of the season.

I hate that my grand nieces and nephews cannot have that experience in their schools where Christmas is no longer much even acknowledged if at all.
