Schieffer: Debate Didn’t Sway Many Voters


HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — CBS News contributor Bob Schieffer doesn’t believe Monday night’s presidential debate swayed many voters across the nation.

“I’ve never seen one where the decorum broke down the way that it did tonight. You almost never see audience responses like we saw tonight. We were expecting a different kind of debate and I think in that way that we saw one. I don’t think Donald Trump lost any votes tonight, I’m not sure Hillary Clinton gained any votes tonight,” the former “Face the Nation” moderator said on CBS News after the debate.

He continued, “What we saw was an example of how deep a divide is now between Democrats and Republicans. I didn’t learn very much new tonight. I thought they started off pretty well, it was fairly businesslike, and then about 15 minutes in it broke down into name-calling, and it was back-and-forth and who can shout the loudest.”

In my not-so-humble opinion, Hillary Clinton clearly out-performed Donald Trump. I don't know if she was reading from an iPad or had an earbud but she read her lines perfectly while Trump seemed to stumble. And, most important, he performed just like Mitt Romney. He was being a “gentleman”, refusing to attack or really question his opponent.

I spent the entire time waiting for him to bring up the things he should have. Not one word about The Clinton Foundation. One lousy reference to her emails and that was strictly defensive – about his tax returns. It was like watching speeches.

And nobody could possibly doubt as to whose side Holt was on! He gave her all the time she needed/wanted and constantly tried to silence Trump or accuse him of not directly answer the question. As Guiliani said this morning on F&F, he was another Candy Crowley.

Trump clearly has left himself wide open to attacks from the Leftist/Progressive media.

Did I change my mind about Clinton? Not in the least. I heard lie after lie after lie from her and she showed me that she is a perfect inside-the-beltway politician who spouts platitudes to hide a total lack of actually doing good for the country.

Donald Trump is still the outsider, just the kind of person in Washington to put an end to the constant efforts to destroy the USA.

If you are looking for someone poised and articulate, well versed on the issues, Clinton won.
If you were looking for Trump to stay in the ring 'til the final bell, Trump won.
I didn't learn anything new about either one. It was more interesting than I expected, and Trump did better than I thought he would. He needs to learn not to interrupt/talk over Clinton. That was lo-class. This isn't the Republican primaries.
