This is one of the great films of all time in any genre. Zinneman ramps up the tension in every scene.
The best bit is the use of the theme song in every key scene.
Gar Cooper plays the emattled sherriff facing down an old enemy. Its actually his wedding day and he is well liked. But bit by bit the cowardly townsfolk turn their backs on him as the danger comes nearer.
In the end only his new wife stands by him against the forces of evil. Apparently John Wayne was critical of Cooper because he felt that the film showed the US in a bad light.
I think Rio Bravo was made as an answer to the film.
High Noon is a rebuke to civic America where cowardice and self interest reign supreme. Just like now.
