Engaging any teenager with targeted reading material can be a challenge. So much more so with ELs. One approach that I have found effective is to personally create material that reflects/is based on the everyday experiences of the students. If the teacher knows a given group of students well enough, this can end up being highly familiar with what the students see/do/deal with on a daily basis. Such familiarity helps the students relate to the text and encourages interest and engagement. A drawback to this is that it can take a really long time to prepare. However, with the rise of AI the material can be produced much more quickly when the right information is input. Students can eventually use AI (guided) themselves to create content.

There is an often-overlooked aspect of AI in research, information, and the composition of writing.

The PDF. Sounds strange, but you can literally create an OpenAI GPT chatbot and train it to use the information you have compiled, as long as you put it into a PDF. Then the bot will use that training material to return information. You want to compile a list of everyday life as a student in today's schools, then provide a PDF that covers any reading resources you can think of. Then, target your prompts so the bot can give detailed, intricate information in the assignment.

This way, you can catalog the information you want and refer back to it when needed. Saves a ton of work, and you only need to do it once, unless the material becomes outdated or needs updating.

I purchased the Just Flight Professional addons for the Bonanza 36 and the Baron 58.

I uploaded their user manuals, in PDF format, and then asked it for a normal checklist.

I've never done this link thing, so here goes.

 
I've noticed students get a kick out of using AI to produce illustrations for text as well.

A lot of "old school" educators (which admittedly I am) are still somewhat wary of AI, but it's not going away so it's high time to develop skill in using it effectively.

I refuse to capitulate to AI. I feel like it's going to make everybody stupid by being used as a substitute for basic cognitive skills.

So was the computer and internet, for that matter. The last time I went to a public library to research something was 25 years ago. I still have a worn library card in my wallet, for some reason. There are also a dictionary and a thesaurus in the house somewhere, but they're buried in a pile of books my wife never got around to reading.

A.I. has already replaced thinking. What more damage can it do?
 
Isn't one of the biggest failings of education the lack of "rigor", and A.I. add to this problem?

AI can be a valuable tool in the hands of a person who understands its uses and limitations.This would need to be a person capable of analysis using critical thinking and dynamic reasoning.

In short, a person smarter than the AI they query.

Unfortunately, as one on the inside, I can say that public education is now focused on 2 things: rote memorization of facts and testing strategies in order to pass the State Test and indoctrination in the currently fashionable political beliefs of the teachers unions.

Therefore, few students possess the qualities needed to be a useful and productive user of AI.

Yer living (teaching) in a bubble. I live in a bubble occupationally too. My apartment building is a shining example of the best management practices. However, I don't deny that landlord/tenant problems are the norm, not the exception.

Do you agree or comport with the rest? I went to a conference of neighborhood rental property owners and we couldn't come to a certain agreement.
