I would venture that working class neighborhoods, such as where Joe grew up, are more likely to brew antisemitism than middle-class neighborhoods with college-educated professionals. And for obvious reasons: working class areas with high school educated parents are more likely to be resentful or jealous of those who achieve more.

I saw this first-hand, when I moved as a kid from a lower-class area to an upper-class neighborhood. In the poorer neighborhood, I and my family had been subjected to numerous hate crimes - from keying J E W into our brand new car, to scraping the word J E W into my locker to being teased as wearing “Israel clothes” (which were the same things everyone wore). Once we moved to the upscale area, there was much, MUCH less antisemitism.

I think the bigger problem is that Jews, as a survival strategy, have always considered themselves Jews first and Americans/Germans/Russians second. Look out for your own, screw everyone else. Now, I kind of get that, they'd have been assimilated by the cultures they lived in completely if they had done otherwise.

Naw, they are just more likely to keep those kinds of sentiments to themselves. After Rahm Emmanual got elected as Mayor of Chicago, I had one college-educated engineer say to me, "I can't believe a Jew got elected!" (Now, I can make a whole list of why Rahm was a horrible mayor, but his religion wasn't one of them.)

I suspect what most of those working-class guys resent is working for a guy who drives a big fancy car into work while they are all driving beaters, and they "Jew" them on raises every quarter. In fact, this very much describes my first job out of the Army, where that guy (We called him "the cockatoo" because he had this bad rug that stuck up on the top of his head) had to park his fancy car outside of his window because the employees kept keying it.

Well, let's look at that. Every other immigrant group has been expected to assimilate.

For instance, my grandparents came here from Germany in 1925. They learned English and were expected to put America before Germany (my dad served in the US Army in WWII, fighting Germany). My grandparents stopped calling themselves "Ludwig and Magdelena" and started calling themselves "Louis and Helen", and changed the way they pronounced the family name to sound less German.

Nor did they marry strictly within their own group. My extended family now includes Polish, Mexican, Chinese, Lithuanian, Irish, English, Dutch, and probably a few others I haven't identified. I am the last member of my family who speaks any German, and I speak it badly. (I can honestly say my Mandarin is better than my German.)

Martin Luther King was prophetic and wise in his understanding that if people weren't judged by their character, and instead were being judged by their skin color, then it possible that the good side of a group/race of people, could be brought down by the bad side of a group/race of people within the same race/group.

Sadly when group's or members of a race bind themselves together in order to stupidly trash their entire group/race of people (as if to want to bring the good side into the crazy with them in hopes to look strong in their numbers), is when the real tragedy occurs.. This is because the good side absolutely doesn't agree with the crazy, but sadly they are being dragged into the bad sides situation against their will....

King knew of this problem, and he knew that if he didn't say what he said about judgement of character, then the bad amongst the race/group could cause the entire group to be held back or stereotyped by other group's that might form a confused opinion about an entire race/group of people that is appearing to agree with the bad side of the group, but in reality they were dragged into the bad side against their will.

This confusion happens outside of a race if individuals are not being judged as individual's based upon their individual character's, and instead (the opposite of what King believed), are being judged upon their skin color.
