Here are the 9 people killed in Avalanche last week in Lake Tahoe

They simply picked a very dangerous route rather than the easier and safer one
They were all experienced skiing enthusiasts. One wonders why the lead guide, having experienced this sort of bad decision making in the past and almost costing him his life...decided to make another bad decision?

EDIT - Upon further review of the article, the founder of the company is the one that had the near life taking event happen to him. Not any of the three guides actually on the trip. Still, have to question the decision making here.

just to clarify how do you x-ski on 6 feet of snow? you would sink

normally the trails are groomed or the snow is frozen hard

This is back country skiing. There is a certain amount of snow that gets packed in underneath the ski when x-skiing. You usually don't sink all the way to the ground (on skis anyway).

Shame. They all look like really wonderful people with their entire lives ahead of them. I don't know the exact details of the circumstances but avalanche is one of those things you have to be mindful of, and large groups exacerbate the likelihood.

Really a good idea to go to places that were just recently tested for and released of any potential snow-slide material.

Didn’t all the weather warnings and the recent news story about the other group of skiers killed in an avalanche give these people any pause at all?

Doing something stupid doesn’t make it brave
