If the digestive system is responsible for providing necessary nutrition to all parts of the body, including itself, what is the effect of poor digestion?

That really is rhetorical. Trick question? Humor? Or just pulling chains?

The Mexican who served it didn't wash his hands.

For those of youse that don't get it...it is meant as a joke.

The funniest joke is when we laugh at our selves and since Mexicans are of EURO decent we all can laugh at it.

I am too stupid to understand your question, I will say, eat fiber and probiotics when you can. The gut is critical to functioning health. We treat our cars with the best gas, oil and regular maintenance, but we don't care to do the same to our bodies at times unfortunately.

Also, as a personal affidavit, a healthy lifestyle of regular fasting has been magical to my body.

It seems that when you get to USMB age, people can start to experience digestion issues.

My little brother was taking antacid every day with meals to prevent heartburn. Recently he found out that the antacid lowered his level of intrinsic factor and thus his body couldn't absorb enough vitamin B12.

He got a B12 shot and quit taking the antacids. He felt much better.

Some people with chronic GERD have found the proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec and such) to be a godsend and eliminate the need for antacids. I've been taking them for years with no vitamin/mineral deficiencies anywhere.

A good doctor can usually prescribe what we need when we need it. There are really bad doctors out there though.

I will be glad to answer that question as I have lived it!

My entire digestive system shut down due to unusually effective pain killers I took after transplant surgery. The pain I endured was completely debilitating to the point I could not walk. Every bump in the road on my 3 1/2 hour drive to the transplant hospital was so bad that I screamed out loud. Not knowing the cause, they loaded me up with a narcotic pain medicine when I got to the hospital which worsened the damage. My entire digestive system shut down completely. My stomach would no longer pass food to my intestines, and everything stayed where it was. It was literally paralyzed. I developed constipation, renal failure, and could not even swallow water without agonizing pain. Gas would build up in my stomach because I was not eating and had to be removed by a suction NG tube. If not, I would throw up constantly, and it was mostly gas. My potassium levels dropped, and I had IVs to provide that. Because I could not drink, my mouth was constantly drying out.

They put me on IV fluids and after a week or so they placed a feeding tube. I developed complete kidney failure and had to be given dialysis treatments. I started losing weight rapidly, going from about 230 pounds down to a low of 155 pounds.

It took three months to recover, but muscle atrophy and blood pressure issues made it even worse. My lower legs looked like my forearms had been before I got sick. As I recovered, I had kidney dialysis every two days for about 6 weeks. I ate literally nothing for almost two months. When I regained the ability to eat, passing a bowel movement was so painful it almost caused me to pass out. My kidney finally regained their function and could finally stand without my blood pressure dropping. This was made even worse because I spent 2 1/2 months laying in a hospital bed, so even walking was nearly impossible. Throughout this, I was not allowed any pain medicine other than lidocaine patches for my painful back.

After I recovered enough, they put me in rehab hospital for a week where I built up my ability to walk. I still could not eat a regular meal. I often skipped meals completely, but I regained some weight back up to about190, but most of that weight was because my body had shed all of its fluid. I made it back home but still struggled to walk up the three steps at my front door. It took another calendar year before I could walk a flight of stairs without pain.

One other side effect I failed to mention, was all of the hair on my body fell out. Only the hair on my head grew but even it was at a reduced rate. I shaved twice in 3 months and had no real facial hair. My wife said I looked like a concentration camp survivor.

Fortunately, it has now been two years and all I have are those horrible memories, and I thank God every day that I am still alive to ***** about it. My health is now even better than before I developed liver failure in 2019. I weigh the same as I did when I joined the Navy in high school. not bad for someone about to turn 65 next month. I thank my now 19-year-old liver for keeping me young.

I am so healthy that my wife and I are going on a cruise to the Caribbean in three weeks with our best friends.

I had frequent heartburn as well and kept a bottle of antacid tablets in my car, bedroom, and kitchen. Since I started chewing my food better I haven't needed them. Sufficient saliva, produced by prolonged chewing, mitigates the effect of highly acidic foods.

You'll absorb nutrients better with proper chewing.

I shouldn't have said that the antacids lowered his intrinsic factor, it doesn't really work that way, the antacids just exacerbated the problem of low intrinsic factor. If there is not enough stomach acid, the food isn't completely broken down for intrinsic factor proteins to get to the B12.

Your doctor can have you submit a stool sample and test it to check for malabsorption.

Proper chewing makes the stomach's job much easier. There are no teeth down there.

I did a three-day complete fast back in the day. I came out of it a new man.
