Hate Crimes

Watching Law and Order SVU has a perp grab a transvestite in a woman's bathroom and stick a iron pipe up his ass. They automatically say it's a hate crime. Why is it a hate crime? Is any criminal act against a gay person a hate crime? That makes no sense.

A person was chosen because of their identity and was assaulted in a very horrible way because of it. That is a hate crime.

My only beef with the notion of hate crimes is that it is too often applied in one direction. If an angry transvestite were to select a target because he was a straight male, it would ALSO apply, but probably wouldn't be prosecuted accordingly.

In this country, blacks, especially, get away with hate crimes because the same principles applied when they are victim are not applied at all when they are the perp.

A hate crime is whenever you do a crime on a individual that's targeted to hatred for who that person is.

I suspect that those that are against hate crimes are against them because they see themselves in the position of committing them themselves, so they live vicariously through the perpetrators of hate crimes.

If their way of being is why they are attacked then yes its a hate crime, but sometimes people are attacked anyway if not killed no matter how they are too.
