Notice that they are not referred to as elections because they aren't elections, they are primaries.

The political parties are private organizations. If they wanted to they could just decide on their own who to nominate. Smaller parties do that all the time. The primaries are an attempt to find out whom is most preferred by the public, but it is not binding.

All of this is public and well known information.
