1000 A.D., almost 500 years before Columbus
The Vikings, led by Leif Erickson, reached North America around 1000 A.D., almost 500 years before Columbus1. They used their longships to cross the Atlantic Ocean and settled in the Americas2. Archaeological discoveries have shown that they had traveled farther south to areas where grapes grew, to Vinland3. The Norse exploration of North America began in the late 10th century, with settlements in Greenland and Newfoundland4.
