Obama Administration Wants Judge to Toss Embassy Hostage Suit
In court papers filed Tuesday night without any announcement, the Justice Department argued that the agreement to release the hostages, known as the Algiers Accords, precluded lawsuits against Iran.

The Obama administration has asked a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit against Iran filed by Americans held hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran 30 years ago.

The request comes in a $6.6 billion class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington. Fifty-two American diplomats and military officials were held captive for more than a year at the end of Jimmy Carter's presidency by a group of Islamist students who supported the Iranian revolution.

The hostages were released on Jan. 20, 1981, just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the new president.

In court papers filed Tuesday night without any announcement, the Justice Department argued that the agreement to release the hostages, known as the Algiers Accords, precluded lawsuits against Iran.

A similar lawsuit brought by the Iranian hostages was dismissed in 2000 after the government successfully argued it was banned by the Algiers Accords. The hostages argue that legislation passed by Congress last year and signed into law by President George W. Bush gives them the right to bring private lawsuits.

But the Justice Department argued that the law does not mention the Algiers Accords, much less explicitly repeal them....

The Prophet (probably HRC) is working inside a scenario which can lead to smart assertiveness following a play nice period, or it is the precursor to appeasement foreign policy. So far I am giving HRC the benefit of the doubt. So far.

Why not apologize for overthrowing their democracy all those years ago? Or demand payment for the hostage thing, but be ready to pay them for the coup...

Does this dude EVER stop? Picking right up where Carter left off.

Shall we punish Rome for throwing all those Jews the lions, or what?

This is a case of the President putting pressure on the judiciary to toss out a legal complaint. The class action suit is by former hostages against Iran. Obama has NO business in it. But then again, he's good at that - sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong instead of doing his job.

This guy could burn the White House to the ground and y'all would give him a pass.

I just hope there's another Reagan type out there that can strighten all this shit out, if there's anything left of US.

Let's see.

Ronnie gets credit from the wingers for bringing the hostages home. Part of the reason the hostages were released was because we agreed to not let them sue Iran.

And now some people want us to go back on our word and pretty much insure that throughout the world American words are meaningless.

Pretty funny.

Wouldn't it be terrible to betray all the trust that the rest of the world places in America now ?

I think the suit was filed by Americans (maybe the people held hostage?) NOT America.

BLNT.

Obama should have just made this statement

As President of the United States I would like to screw Americans to appease their enemies. No American freedom is worth another country being mad at us.
