'HATE' KILLED NYU KID ​

April 6, 2006 -- The NYPD hate-crimes unit is probing a report that a white NYU student killed by a car in Harlem was fleeing a gang of black teenagers screaming "Get ******!" sources said yesterday.
If the report proves true, the violence could turn out to be an eerie replay in reverse of the infamous 1986 Howard Beach murder, where a black man was chased into traffic and killed by a group of white bigots.

The 20-year-old student, John Broderick Hehman, died yesterday, six days after the attack.

The sources said Hehman might have been targeted as a soft mark for robbers after the teenage gang spotted the caring urban-studies major handing pocket change to a wheelchair- bound man near the corner of 125th Street and Park Avenue Saturday night.

The gang of youths, some of them as young as 11, had been smoking pot inside a nearby Popeye's fast-food eatery at 8:30 p.m. when they spotted Hehman walking by and then stopping to help the handicapped man.

An anonymous caller later tipped the CrimeStoppers hot line that a group of youths screamed, "Get ******!" and ran toward him.

Witnesses said Hehman fled into traffic against the light and was hit by a Mercedes-Benz traveling east on 125th Street.

The 38-year-old driver remained at the scene and was not charged.

"When we heard the crash, we thought it was two cars - it was such a loud noise," said a witness.

"I couldn't believe it was a person," he said.

Hehman, known as "J.B.," had been in a coma since he was struck.

He died of massive head trauma at Harlem Hospital.

His sister, Marisa, said he had been walking to meet a friend when he was attacked.

His father, Manhattan investment banker Thomas Hehman, lives on the Upper East Side.

On a student Web site, Hehman joked his off-campus interests included "doing laundry."

I wouldn't know if it's porn or not. Frankly, I don't know much about marriage period. I've been married approximately three years total of the fifty years I've been alive. I've been single for 19 years.

A DAMNING SILENCE

April 9, 2006 -- It's been a week now since a car hit NYU student John Hehman after he ran into a Harlem street, fleeing from a gang of thugs.
After laying in a coma for five days, Hehman died on Wednesday.

Despite its eerie resemblance to the 1986 Howard Beach affair, this incident has all but passed unnoticed.

Back in '86, a gang of white thugs chased Michael Griffith, a black man, onto the busy Belt Parkway - where he, too, was killed by a car. The outrageous act inflamed racial passions across the city.

Last year, when another black man was beaten by several white thugs from Howard Beach, the city again took notice.

Al Sharpton & Co. saw to that.

So, Howard Beach, big headlines.

Harlem, hardly any headlines at all.

Could it be because this time the gang was black and the victim white?

Obviously, the police have to take their time as they make their case, but the silence in the media - relative to the other two cases - is stunning.

Eyewitness accounts say Hehman had stopped to give a homeless man a dollar. One thug allegedly approached, asking, "Where's our dollar?"

Another yelled, "Get the white boy!" or "Get ******!" The gang chased him.

Running into 125th Street, Hehman was hit by a Mercedes Benz.

The incident is troubling in other respects: The gang members were allegedly smoking pot in a local Popeye's right before accosting Hehman.

If that's the case, the NYPD must get these thugs off the street immediately: Tolerance for this sort of activity violates the basic precepts that restored this city's social fabric these last dozen years.

Meanwhile, while we have never particularly cared for the concept of "hate" crimes, the fact is that the statutes must be enforced as written.

A little public protest from Al Sharpton and his merry pranksters would go a long way toward making their reflexive "outrage" when the shoe is on the other foot a bit more credible.

Even if they don't really mean it.

Any white person who speaks out against this as a hate crime will be written off as a Klansman or neo-nazi.

Here's a question I ponder when I read about the kids suspected of committing this most heinous of crimes.

Its not meant to cast blame on white people or the victim, nor to defend the little monsters who did this.

Where were their fathers? If my guess is right, at least 1 of those 4 young black kids has a dad in prison for drugs, either doing them or selling them, or a drug-related offense. Probably 2, this being NY and it having the infamous Rockefeller laws.

My point is this: our government betrays us and helps to destroy the potential of many of its poor citizens (especially blacks in the cities and whites in small towns) because it insists on pursuing a failed war against drugs, a war that will NEVER be successful and will only continue to cost this nation more lost treasure, spilled blood and stifled potential.

The liberals have it all wrong in thinking a woman can raise a kid successfully on her own... no offense to these strong, brave women who do, but the majority of those kids are severely lacking in many key areas of manhood and womanhood, leaving them less than stellar (or even moderate) contributors and participants of society.
