In the 20th Century it was Britain, who wanted to stop Germany from becoming a dominant European power. Belgium and Poland? Their declarations of war starting WW1 and WW2 were transparently political and had nothing to do with Britain's national security.

It's like our decadent economic system's reaction to the rapid economic growth in China. In the late 19th Century, Germany all of a sudden exceeded England's rate. Just like America, instead of changing in order to be more competitive, England set up World War I, forming alliances with its former enemies, France and Russia. It also made itself a protector of Holland and Belgium.
