"GE Appliances moves some production from China to Kentucky with $490M investment

GE Appliances has announced a nearly half-billion-dollar project that will create 800 jobs and shift production of clothes washers from China to its manufacturing complex in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- GE Appliances announced a nearly half-billion-dollar project Thursday that it says will create 800 new jobs and shift production of clothes washers from China to its massive manufacturing complex in Kentucky.

The $490 million investment positions the Kentucky home appliances company to rank as the biggest U.S. manufacturer of washing machines, it said.

“We are bringing laundry production to our global headquarters in Louisville because manufacturing in the U.S. is fundamental to our ‘zero-distance’ business strategy to make appliances as close as possible to our customers and consumers,” CEO Kevin Nolan said. “This decision is our most recent product reshoring and aligns with the current economic and policy environment.”

The announcement comes as President Donald Trump attempts to lure factories back to the United States by imposing import taxes — tariffs — on foreign goods. He has slapped 10% tariffs on imports from most countries and put 30% levies on Chinese goods. GE Appliances says nearly all the steel used in its U.S. manufacturing for its appliances comes from American steelmakers."

You know, I like this winning thing. I think we'll keep winning. The American Working Class will be great again.

LOL apparently you missed the part about them having a zero-distance strategy.

Very intriguing thread...since my wife and I just bought a GE washing machine today!

If their way of making their products hasn't changed, what you have now is a keeper! 2013 was the year that the GE dryer in my house had to be replaced. It was purchased in 1976 and so it went for 37 years. :) :) :)

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. I now have a Hot Point dryer, but it's been no problem for the last 12 years. :) :) :)

Zero distance means they are going to be employing Americans to manufacture goods in America to be purchased by Americans.

This is fine but GE is junk. I will never purchase it regardless where its made.

We just bought a Speed Queen washer and dryer set. Made in the USA and built to last.

Maybe it will improve their products back to how well made they use to be. I have avoided G.E. products for years, probably 20 years. A lot of that had to do with the ilk of Jefferey Immelt, the CEO in the 2000s. What a piece of shit.

We had a nightmare experience with a LG fridge and the Samsung replacement isn't much better.
Finding appliances that actually work is getting harder and harder.

If they increases worker wages big time the product will be better.

As well as if it is not made in China it will be better.
G.E. is a PERFECT example of everything that is wrong with modern corporatism. A once brilliant company with a long line of dependable, innovative products - that became a behemoth of runaway greed and nothing matters but share profits - and nothing was off the table to make them higher.

Agreed. They like many went overseas because the claimed labor is too expensive here which of course has never been true in any company.

It was about wiping out labor cost, being able to build products without having to provide VERY expensive environmental compliance - and China built the factories waaay less expensive than here. All they cared about was increasing the profits of - literally - a handful of people at the cost of 10,000s of families.
G.E. like I said, is a monument for corporate greed.

Well since our beloved corporations polluted willfully and wantingly in the 70s and 80s we needed to step on them and for good reason. The Ohio River started on fire, not from average folk.
