PHOENIX (AP) — A teenage Liberian refugee who pleaded guilty in the gang-rape of an 8-year-old girl in Phoenix last summer has been sentenced to probation.
A juvenile court judge Wednesday also sent the 15-year-old boy to a secure treatment center for at least a year.
He was the oldest of four boys charged. He was originally charged as an adult, but later pleaded guilty in juvenile court to kidnapping and sex assault charges.
The teen apologized at the hearing. But Judge Samuel Thumma said he has struggled to understand how anything like that could have happened.
The two youngest boys have been found incompetent to stand trial, while the other boy's case is pending.
All of the children, including the victim, are Liberian refugees.
