'We thought we were going to die': SUV driver's terror as gang of 50 cyclists attack his car on New York's Fifth Avenue - amid surge in violent crime in the city
- Attack occurred on Fifth Avenue and corner of 21st street on Tuesday afternoon
- Up to 50 youths on bicycles began stopping traffic and targeted a BMW SUV
- Several of the teens began smashing up the vehicle and tried to open its doors
- 'That's something like you would see on the streets of a war zone. I never thought New York would get this bad,' the car's driver, Max Torgovnick, stated
- His mother was in the car at the time and believed she was going to be killed
- Police were nowhere to be seen, and the incident comes as New York struggles to deal with soaring rates of violent crime
- Officials agreed to slash the NYPD's budget by up to $1 billion earlier this year
