PARIS, Oct 5 (KUNA) -- French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday told French radio that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) radicals resembled more of an army than a terrorist group, warning the coalition operation against ISIL will be a long one.
"We could almost say this is no longer a group, it is almost a terrorist army," Le Drian told "RTL" radio here.
The Defence Minister said that he estimated the number of ISIL fighters at around 30,000 men, which would have to be first stopped and then overcome.
"The operation will be long... because we have to firstly stop Daash. Then will come the period of winning back (territory), which will be done on the ground by the Iraqis and Peshmergas," he said.

Illinois Man Charged With Trying to Travel to Mideast to Join ISIS

19-year-old Illinois man was charged Monday with a terrorism-related offense for allegedly trying to join ISIS in its battle to carve out an Islamic caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

Authorities said Mohammed Hamzah Khan of the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook was arrested Saturday at O'Hare International Airport as he waited to board a flight to Vienna. From there, he intended to fly to Istanbul, Turkey, and then make his way into Syria or Iraq to fight for ISIS, they said.

Khan was charged Monday in a federal criminal complaint with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He appeared briefly in court and was ordered to remain in custody pending a detention hearing on Thursday.
