Freight is usually brokered....
You go online and bid to haul freight....cheapest per mile usually gets the contract without anything being checked....not the quality of driver, insurance, or much of anything.

All through brokerage houses...
And there are several.
(Not listing them as I'm not their advertising agent)

And it seemed nothing could be done about states like CA giving out CDLs to illegal immigrants who have zero driving skills or knowledge of even how to drive a rig commercially or safely in the US.

Enter SCOTUS:

Now the rules have changed drastically and dramatically. And the price finally went up.

Yay!!!!! .....well until crap starts costing even more.

Well basically the drivers need to be able to read, write, and speak English.
Pass a proper CDL test. And have enough points on his license that he can operate the tractor safely....

Habib or Nigel who can't speak a word and thinks that a 42 foot trailer can perform a U-Turn on a 2 lane highway in the middle of traffic safely.....not happening anymore.

Now Hiring signs just went up everywhere because half of the freight brokers just went out of business.

This will probably end the era of owner-operators.
Maybe....maybe not.
Depending upon whether they can get insurance and pay the fees.

As it is....mileage rates are going UP. Between citizens with proper ID in short supply and refusal to work for $50/day....

Freight still has to move. It's just gonna cost more.

Many are too small to have enough safety record for brokers to risk. It's easier to just use Swift or Hunt.

Estimates of instantly retired drivers are somewhere around 20%

a fifth of all Drivers are now off the road. One in 5 drivers gone.....

So....
Who you gonna call?
A few are scrambling....including big outfits. They just put out the ads for more drivers.
