Yet, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, just let Fox have all those viewers who want a pro-republican slant.
That disproves your claim. They are NOT going after the money.
utter nonsense. Aside from the reality that they're businesses, which means they're in it for the money, network news caters to mainstream America. They blow away Fox in viewership and don't need to cater to the fringe.
If you want to compare results of business models, you should compare Fox to CNN, instead of to BROADCtAST news.
My point stands. the network news puts out crap and don't even try to appeal to the massive underserved audience that Fox has shown in there.
Your point is absurd since network news blows away Fox, despite your hollow claims they put out crap. The only comparison between Fox and other cable news channels is that they're dealing with news 24/7. Still, when people want news on TV, the vast majority are tuning into network channels.
And if one of the big three decided to start trying to attract American viewers with pro-republican slant, as opposed to the pro-democratic slant of the media as a whole, they would be making a strong play for HALF the viewership of the other two.
But they never do that.
Nope, they don't. Because political ideologies don't sell eyeballs.
Emotional investment does.
Fox noise doesn't get its ratings because it takes a particular political position. It gets them because it traffics in fear and loathing. It gets them because it presents this fantasy narrative of "evil liburrul media" and "eebil black people" and "eebil politicians" that are all out to "get" you and we're on your "side". In short it sells paranoia.
The particular details are not the point --- the psychology is. Angry old white guys pounding on the table joined by miniskirted bimbos surrounded by a candy-colored set while Pee Wee Herman-style suggestions run across the screen and transition graphics go wwwwhhhhoooooossssh ---- this is a veritable ORGY of emotional stimulation, splashed all over the obediently waiting viewer's face. And they lap it up. Or at least enough of them do to milk their wallets.
It's no coincidence that Rupert Murdoch made his fortune selling sleazy tabloid newspapers. He understands how the basest human weaknesses can be exploited. He understands there's gold in them thar ills. Fox Noise is simply the same thing as a gossip rag, transferred to television. Instead of Hollyweird celebrities they focus on politicians, but it's the same thing ----
personal, rather than ideological.
People (the politicians), not
policy.
That's because policy is an abstract that requires intellect and context. But when you focus on
people, you have an emotional hook. Policy is impersonal but you can directly demonize a person. And when you do that you create a divide, with "our side" obviously being the guys in the white hats. And that keeps the viewer coming back for more. And the more you do that, the more ratings you get, ergo the more money you can make selling commercials. Which means the viewer's just been played.
Doesn't matter which "side" you take to do that. The point is emotional manipulation. Wherever you can manipulate emotions --- you have an audience. See Fox Noise --- and for that matter everything on TV --- for what it is....
psychological, not
political, propaganda. The political game, when it's present, is just one of many tools, others of which include the sports tool, the people-freaking-out-in-disaster tool, the outraged morals tool, and the check-out-the-plebes tool. Ultimately its target is not this political "side" or that one --- it's YOU.
