The TSA program is currently providing hotel rooms to 5,700 residents displaced by Helene, FEMA spokesperson Lea Creager told the Citizen Times Jan. 9. Of those residents, more than half — 3,500 — were deemed ineligible to continue to stay in hotels in a Jan. 3 eligibility review from the agency. More than 1,600 of those residents were unable to be reached after multiple attempts, Creager said, leading to their ineligibility in the program.

"This number might have decreased if people who we had previously been unable to contact returned our call and demonstrated an ongoing housing need," Creager said, noting that as many as eight attempts might have been made without a response.

Households are deemed ineligible by an inspection that indicates their home is now habitable, when they decline an inspection or when FEMA has been "unable to contact the applicant to update their housing needs, despite multiple attempts," Creager said,

Some people will be going back to their homes. Of those leaving hotels, "nearly 1,400" had a FEMA inspection that has deemed their home habitable, Creager said.
