It comes ultimately from demand. Not that hard to grasp.Shown is a $24million drug money bust (just one of many such). This is what fuels the illegal drug trade. However, few seem to know where it comes from (curious). We should ask some 4th graders. Perhaps they can shed some light.

I have a drug problem, it's too hard to score what I want...Your upside-down flag indicates that you too believe we have some serious problems that need to be addressed. Could the drug problem be one of them?
Just blotter acid.Must be a pretty exotic drug.
No. Demand for drugs=>increased supply of drugs=>increased cash flow going back to cartels..........rinse and repeat...endlessly.And? Are there dots to be connected?
Where does the cash come from? No. Demand for drugs=>increased supply of drugs=>increased cash flow going back to cartels..........rinse and repeat...endlessly.
Cash is the above and beyond profit of the illegal drug trade. But what fuels it...is constant and overwhelming demand for more product.
Maybe. But it's unorthodox and may or may not work depending on how it's implemented. Is there a solution?
Start by legalizing and decriminalizing them. I mean, all drugs, everything. All of it. You take the overt profiteering and violence out of the drug trade almost overnight.Got some details?
The illegal suppliers will always undercut legal suppliers so the cartel drug wars, violence, and corruption will continue. Legalization/decriminalization just plays into their hands.Start by legalizing and decriminalizing them. I mean, all drugs, everything. All of it. Then, comes the hard part. Regulation, taxation, puritanical and religious views on drug use, making sure that you don't end up creating a demand for a stronger product (ala the current pot dispensary solution) through over regulation. Also, you WILL have to allocate money for addiction and treatment programs..a lot of money, in the form of both human specialists and treatment programs. You will always have addicts, no matter what system you try to implement.
The question before us, is the current war on drugs angle working?, or do we finally look at trying something different?
Not if you legalize, decriminalize, and remove the profit from it by offering the strongest and most potent product to your end users. The illegal suppliers will always undercut legal suppliers so the cartel drug wars, violence, and corruption will continue. I think a different approach is needed, more long-term thinking. Quick fixes seldom work.

THAT is the long term thinking.
I stipulated that you would still need money and human resources to address the addiction problem...which is not solved with the solution I presented. You will always have the constant of addiction. No matter what course is chosen, the need to address it is unchanged.Removing the profit makes it a government service funded by taxpayers.
That's not going to fly.
And that doesn't solve the addiction problem and other problems associated with it. Allowing bad behavior is never a good idea.
We are woefully short of those 'human resources' now.I stipulated that you would still need money and human resources to address the addiction problem...which is not solved with the solution I presented. You will always have the constant of addiction. No matter what course is chosen, the need to address it is unchanged.
Illegal drug producers will always be able to provide drugs at a lower cost than the government. Stronger drugs as well.Removing the profit is the only way to remove the violence and bloodshed as regulating "bad behavior" will be a virtually impossible task...and will not fly with the 1st and 2nd Amendment champions.
And? Are there dots to be connected?
