Actually, it would cause a recession because when you discourage consumer activity, you lose jobs. That costs jobs in manufacturing, retail, and distribution.

Well, that means that the US Assembled car would be more expensive, and the automaker will look into reducing bodies on the line in favor of more automation.

Less cars will be sold on the showroom floor, so that means less jobs there as well. Not to mention all the people who maintain cars, transport them, etc.

The only guys who might do well are the service techs trying to breathe another few years out of your beater that you are stuck with because you couldn't afford a new one.

On the other hand, a progressive income tax does it right. The rich pay their fair share, the poor pay little to nothing, and the middle class has enough to engage in consumer activity.

Why is Trump using tariffs?​

Trump says tariffs will encourage US consumers to buy more American-made goods, increase the amount of tax raised and lead to huge levels of investment.
He wants to reduce the gap between the value of goods the US buys from other countries and those it sells to them. He argues that America has been taken advantage of by "cheaters" and "pillaged" by foreigners.
The US president has made other demands alongside tariffs.
When he announced the first tariffs of his current term against China, Mexico and Canada, he said he wanted them to do more to stop migrants and illegal drugs reaching the US.

Okay, I realize you are like, stupid and shit.

So if consumers buy less goods, that hurts the merchant, the distributor, the end manufacturer. All American jobs.

Yesterday, I found out a key component we sell has been delayed by weeks. Why? Not because we stopped buying it. It's proprietary and we can't resource it easily.

But because those cargo containers don't leave China until they are filled up, it takes a little longer to fill them up.

So we are paying more for the component AND it's taking us longer to get them.
