Currently included in the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, is a 2.3% tax on total sales of medical devices by manufacturers that went into effect on January 1,2013.
This tax works much like a typical excise tax, like taxes on cigarettes, by increasing the per-unit prices of a medical device. Where it differs from excise taxes like on cigarettes is that this tax is levied on the manufacturer or importer before a taxable medical device is sent to the wholesaler or hospital.
