You have a climate that is already warming because of the Milankovic Cycles, hunters and climate change dramatically reduces the number of mammoths that eat the small trees, so these trees take over what was tundra, and change the albedo of that area. Which increases the speed of the warming.

Pretty straight forward. In fact, as the present tundra is undergoing exactly the same kind of change as short shrubs are moving northward due the the increase in growing time, and increase in warmth.
