Federal Research Results for Free

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has moved to make the results of federally funded research available to the public for free within a year, bowing to public pressure for unfettered access to scholarly articles and other materials produced at taxpayers’ expense.

“Americans should have easy access to the results of research they help support,” John Holdren, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote on the White House website.

While I applaud the idea, it will be the implementation that will be the rub. Much federally-funded research is done through universities that want to leverage the research for profitable patents. We’ll see how it goes.

I agree. Just wonder how it'll work with private labs and patent problems.

Hmmm......... If a private lab is working with public money, we deserve to know what they are finding. If they don't like that arrangement, they don't need the money.
