Why would criminals break into a federal building when it is the federal government that enables and protects them?

Please report what important governmental functions were disrupted. Was there any violence? Any police physically attacked? Any damage? Any threats issued? Anyone in danger? Any bear spray? Any weapons? Anyone in combat gear? I've lived around DC for decades, and this was a run-of-the-mill non-violent protest.
