Honestly, it sounds like the father was having his sons spar full-contact, a common practice in the Asian martial arts, and their mother didn't like it. Though they are rather young for full-contact...usually you wait until they reach their teens.

If the children didn't end up in the hospital, I'd say this conviction was an over-reaction.

I started martial arts training at 6. Some start earlier.

I hate to think a father would do that so I'm going to hold judgment until there is more proof than the word of a 4 and 6 year old. I happen to know of at least one woman who convinced her children to lie in court about abuse when she divorced her husband. When the kids were older, they confessed to me there had been NO abuse.
