Facebook and Twitter have been warned they could face tougher government controls if they fail to take action to remove and report terrorists using their networks.
Social media companies are coming under increased pressure to take ‘stronger, faster and further action’ to stop ISIS and other terror groups from recruiting fighters and spreading propaganda.
It includes demands they they abide by new standards on the 'identification, removal and referral of terrorist activity'.
It comes after it emerged Twitter has threatened to ‘tip off’ terror suspects and criminals if the security services ask for information about them.

In the last five years the Counter-Terrorism Internet Referral Unit has successfully removed 90,000 posts linked to terrorism.
But the police and intelligence agencies claim their ability to track the work of extremists online is hampered by web firms protecting users’ privacy.
Last week British judge David Anderson QC warned that intelligence agencies and the police are losing their ability to electronically track terrorists and criminals.
