If you read Thomas Sowell's book, "A Conflict of Visions", you'll see that he calls this out as a main difference. Liberals don't trust the masses to make good decisions. They want decision making in the hands of a few (who came from the masses but managed to separate themselves via the bribery process).

Most people don't know this, but Hamilton (the darling of the left) wanted a monarch. He wanted him appointed for life.
