I've been seeing the commercials on tv for some time now and really became curious as Dyson is introducing a newer, quieter version. So, I went to one of my favorite sites – How Things Work – and got the inside scoop. Check it out for yourself @ HowStuffWorks "How the Dyson Bladeless Fan Works"

the fan's base gives it away. the fan's base has vents in it..meaning the fan is in the base. forces the air upward and out forward. the circular unit up top distributes the air around and out.

Those things are really expensive.

Our Dyson vacuum has failed twice in one year. But they do have excellent customer service.

As a matter of fact I have. :) Saw em in a store recently and tried riddling it looking at the box but was still baffled.

I don't pay for fans, I eat beans and fart a lot, it's cheaper, although the stench keeps the missionaries away...

Nope, there is no fan in the base.

It uses a turbine to force air into the ring. It's really quite brilliant.

So now we know the secret.. Use a smaller cheaper motor, some physics, and sell it for 3X the cost of an equivalent fan..

That's great --- til the square version (to avoid patent issues) comes out of China for $49...

Dyson recalls all heaters

All models of Dyson's bladeless fan heaters pose a fire risk and are now subject to a voluntary recall, the company has announced.

If you own one, check it out @ Dyson recalls all heaters - Telegraph. No word if this is just for the UK
