Epic cheese glut in US; farmers dumping milk into lagoons

United States dairy farms are expected to produce a record 212 billion pounds of milk this year — and there aren’t nearly enough customers to buy it all. Much of this milk is being sent to cheese makers, who are making tons of feta, cheddar, and mozzarella and storing it for later, hoping for the best.

Even that’s not enough to get rid of all the excess milk, which is highly perishable. Some farmers can’t find any takers and are dumping their milk into nearby lagoons

I don't know for certain but remember hearing or reading how the USDA gives farmers subsidies for producing milk and cheese. And the government stores that cheese somewhere. Why don't they give that cheese to food banks and charities that feed the poor and homeless?

The warehouses are full to the brim with cheese. When markets are manipulated by government they are no longer open and free, supply is no longer dictated by pricing and demand, thus you have surpluses as a direct result of government action.

C'mon, then age that crap and hold it over for another couple years as "premium aged cheddar" .. Sell it to the Chinese. This isn't rocket science. There's a lot of empty warehouses just waiting to age that stuff.
