He went out with a vision, he made that vision happen, he got people to invest, he managed those companies, he pushed for his innovations and so on. If it wasn't for musk those companies would not exist today.

So yeah, he made that money himself. Only difference is he didn't sell his idea to millions of people for a few dollars each over time. He sold his idea to a few people for a whole lot of money in a short amount of time.
