On my way to Costco today, I saw who looked to be an elderly lady hitchhiking on the corner of a busy intersection. The lady looked to be in her seventies. She had woman's length gray hair and was wearing clothing suitable for an old lady. She had with her a piece of luggage that looked to be in good condition...the type with a pull handle and wheels. She have several other assorted items with her on the ground.

My first thought were of compassion. I wondered if the lady is homeless, down on her luck. I hope that she would be successful in getting a ride to where ever she needed to go.

My second thought was skepticism. The lady seemed to be in very good condition. She was standing with very good posture, and didn't seem a bit tired. The luggage she had seemed to be in good condition, like new. Her clothing appeared clean and without rips or tears. So my thought was, could this be an attempt to sucker someone to be a victim of a robbery or something? Could the old lady be a man in disguise? Perhaps even transgender. From the distance I saw her from, she could pass for either a woman or a man dressed to look like a woman.

I got to watch the lady for maybe a minute because I was stopped at a red light on the other side of a multi-laned street. The light turned green, so as I continued to drive to Costco, I saw her stick out her tongue at someone in a car that declined to pick her up.

I spent about a hour in Costco. She was gone by the time I dove by the corner she had been on.

I [ick up hitch hikers regularly in my work truck

One is a mid aged woman who is simply trying to get from A to B daily

I don't judge with my offer

I'm not in the habit of picking up hitch hikers, but Hebrews 13:2 in the Bible does say "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it"

She was probably harmless. Besides, I carry a concealed weapon everywhere I go.

There was a time when hitchhiking was common. Now, not so much.

I have given a few hitchhikers rides in the past. One time I saw a dude that had a dog with him, and I thought he couldn't be that bad since he has a dog. That was over 30 years ago when I routinely traveled a couple of hundred miles up and down the interstate each weekend.

I don't pick up hitchhikers but if a woman is standing outside the grocery with a shopping cart full of bags who was also standing there when I went into the store, I will offer to give them a ride if they want usually. I have discovered a few very ghetto streets that I didn't even know existed along the way but whatever. I don't want their food going bad because their ride didn't show up when they were supposed to.

I’ve never even seen a hitchhiker in my life.

It's not against the law for a grey haired woman to hitchhike is it? It's far more dangerous for a young girl.

you might have missed out on a good hand job

People don’t hitchhike anymore

I’ve only seen it in movies
You don't look that young.
I remember dirty hippies. They hitchhiked everywhere or packed into bug buses.
Or vans. There were hippie vans.

It's my understanding that a thumb and a military uniform was a ticket to travel anywhere in the USA during WWII and shortly after.

People are 100x more apathetic these days.
Me and my best friend went to a ball game, had a great time.
Get back, his battery's dead. The interior light was on. :rolleyes-41:
So, he's got cables, and I stand out there holding up the cables up at shoulder height and 100 motherfuckers leaving the game passed by and didn't even try to help a cracker out.
The dude in a house near where we were came out and gave us a jump. Damn.
I remember days where it wouldn't have been like that. Thank God at least some people are normal anymore.

I wasn't 100% sure she was an old woman. She may had really been a man dressed up to look like an old woman as I stated in the OP.
