Only in a liberal Democratic state. Ed Brooke once said even though bigots existed in America, they were over exposed and seemed larger because of media attention. He maintained that his elections, back in the 1960s, showed how far America has come in overcoming it's past.

Edward W. Brooke, the Massachusetts Republican who was the first African-American to be elected to the US Senate since Reconstruction, died Saturday morning in his Coral Gables, Fla., home. He was 95, and his health had declined in the past couple of months.​
