I do not disapprove of immigration controls, I never have. Before 2016 when Trump was elected I said frequently how Trump was a menace but he had a point. The fact is neither democrat nor republican ever openly addressed the immigration problem.
But because it was never talked about people were keen to hear someone talk about it and so in that way the established political elites gave Trump an opening.
But rather than rationally review the system, its problems and develop a plan to improve it, a humane plan that understands that most illegal aliens coming from the South are desperate decent human beings, in a sense refugees of violence, right wing governments (which the US has supported), cartels etc.
Trump predictably sensationalized it and encouraged racism and cruelty and has now normalized that for a huge number of people. Rather than recognizing that mass migration is a symptom of terrible suffering he has perversely morphed into an evil innate within the migrants themselves.
Deporting them to countries run by some of the most appalling regimes, condemning them for simply being a migrant, conflating the illegal crossing of a border with the worst crimes imaginable.
He has morphed large public frustration with the immigration system into a large public loathing and contempt for legal and illegal immigrants themselves, that is the antithesis of how a Christian society should behave.
Yet large numbers of people have fallen for it, have willingly allowed Trump and maga to become their God, their idol. The nation is now swamped in irrational bigots and racists and so do not be surprised at the pushback from more sane people.
It is now based on bigotry and racism and quotas and that's the plain truth, take it or leave it.
