I was in an Irish Pub on St Patrick s day this year

I saw a white woman a black woman a vaguely paki looking man and mixed race kids

They spoke english and they had no foreign accents sounded like native speakers

In Austria are many non whites but very few austrian women have mixed race kids

Obviously there are more in the UK. Austria never practiced colonialism on the scale the UK did.

AI Overview

Based on recent census data, mixed-race families are significantly more common in the UK than in Austria. The UK has a much higher percentage of people who identify as being of mixed or multiple ethnic groups and a higher proportion of households with members of different ethnic backgrounds

UK statistics

  • Growing population: The 2021 census for the UK reported that nearly 1.8 million people, or 2.7% of the total population, identified as "Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups". This represents a tripling of the population since the 2001 census and a 40% increase since the 2011 census.
  • Diverse households: A 2021 census analysis found that 10.1% of multi-person households in England and Wales had members from two or more ethnic groups. This is a considerable increase from 8.7% in 2011.
  • Urban concentration: London has the highest concentration of the mixed-race population. All of the top 10 local authorities with the largest proportion of mixed-race residents are located in London.
  • Prominent mixing: In England and Wales, the most common inter-ethnic household was between a White British and an "Other White" person (a category that includes many Europeans, such as Poles). The "White and Black Caribbean" group was the largest specific mixed-ethnic category.
Austria statistics

  • Homogeneous population: By contrast, Austria's population is much more ethnically homogeneous. A 2018 estimate indicated that 80.8% of the population identified as Austrian, with other groups making up the remaining percentage.
  • Immigrant populations: Austria does have notable immigrant communities, especially from neighboring countries and Turkey. These groups have contributed to the country's multi-ethnic character, particularly in cities like Vienna.
  • Data challenges: Statistics on ethnic origin and mixed families in Austria can be more difficult to track, partly because national statistics often do not record a minority origin once individuals acquire Austrian citizenship.
Contributing factors

The difference in the prevalence of mixed-race families can be attributed to several factors:

  • History: The UK's history of immigration from former colonies and the Commonwealth has led to a more racially diverse population compared to Austria, which has different historical and geographical patterns of immigration.
  • Societal attitudes: Mixed-race relationships have become widely accepted in the UK, and this increasing social acceptance has contributed to the rise in inter-ethnic couples and mixed-ethnicity households.
  • Policies and statistics: The UK has included "Mixed" as a census category since 2001, providing specific and long-term data on this part of the population. In Austria, the lack of consistent tracking after naturalization can obscure the true numbers of mixed-heritage individuals
