do actors get roles based on their looks?

One used to hear the expression "Character Actor" with some regularity. A character actor is someone who basically plays the same role - a secondary one - in everything. Often that character is largely based on appearance. Nathan Lane plays a friendly, harmless homosexual.

Actors are praised and win awards when they take and execute a role that is contrary to their previous pattern.

You'd think it would have been easier to just use a real 80 year-old.
That was the problem there were some actors that age, but none were available for the project. While waiting outside the theater street kids kept calling her the Italian word for grandmother and asking if they could be of help :)

Actually, they do take their looks into account.

In fact, they will sometimes cast a specific looks simply because they can. When they put out a call for actors, there are often thousands vying for the part. Why not hire the one that looks like the character?

Yep, some get roles because of their looks. Some actors get type casted...... play essentially the same character/role across most if not all of their acting gigs. John Wayne for example.
