Depends on who you ask, but here's a rough outline - semi serious. Democrats on occasion get things right, civil rights, Social security, medicare and minimum wage for instance, but then foolishly think reasoning will work, vs republicans who want to return to an imaginary past in which men were men and women and minorities know their place, their world is corporate and the military industrial complex keeps them under the bed afraid oh and white suburbs are oh so nice, vs libertarians who naively believe a free market exists and all you need is freedom and soon not only will Nirvana break out everywhere but flowers and fruit will be plentiful and government will fade and happiness bloom, vs the Greens who love trees and rare and unusual wildlife and foolishly try to stop whale hunting with little boats instead of using the power of their purse, vs the Constitution people who fail to see five to four must mean their favorite documents is a bit unclear and in the end its people who screw up or do good regardless of that ancient document. If you want solutions others can provide, I can help too.

PS you forgot anarchists who are libertarians on stronger drugs.

Democrats - working man's party - poverty, poor, middle class - beliefs fit their needs - equality
Republican - boss man's party - middle class to rich - beliefs are along the lines of realism - power - authoritarian
The parties "leanings" began in British government. The House of Commons, the working man, sat to the left of the PM, the House of Lords, the aristocrats sat to the right of the PM. Lean to the left, lean to the right, stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight. Their ideologies are interchangeable and they interchange often. There are liberal republicans and conservative democrats.
Libertarian - less government - full rights about everything - although a newer party, clings to outdated and unrealistic beliefs
Some people think Libertarian is a medium of the democrats and republicans but it's really more cult. They want the government to protect them and bail them out when they hit bottom, but do not think the government has the right to tell them what to do. Think hippies living in the desert--when they get sick, they want help, otherwise, don't tell them they cannot mate with their pet turtles (just an example)
Green Party - grassroots - believe people should have a say in government - follows original concept of democratic republic - save the planet - non-militaristic - believes the wealthy feed off the poor
Constitution Party - think Puritan religion - very restrictive - does not believe in interpretation of laws or the Constitution
My opinion, this is the scariest party of them all. This party breeds radicals and lunatics such as West Boro Baptist.
