Plenty of whites didn’t arrive here until the early 20th century. They didn’t steal anything - they worked in sweatshops and lived in tenements, eeking out a living - and now they are dead as well. Why in the world would their descendants owe anything?

I'm all for reparations from anyone who actually owned slaves to anyone who was actually enslaved.
No soup for you, squeaky wheel.
Who is being rewarded? They are living their lives.

Meister, other groups have got reparations. And they have received them for things done before we were born. Now given the fact that it takes MONEY to start businesses, plan and rebuild communities or purchase the equipment necessary to upgrade educational facilities, whites talking stupid about money shows the stupidity of the person trying the argument.
Whites have received direct economic stimulus from the government several times that blacks were excluded from and whites continue getting economic development money from the government or handouts such as tax abatements and TIFFS that blacks disproportionately get denied. So try doing some research instead of repeating the same dum argument every day.
Prove how these people have profited. Not some vague generalization, but "this person directly benefitted in this way".

The Teflon Theory of American History says that anything that took place over 30 years ago is Ancient History. It has Absolutely No Effect on the present. Or not much. Unless it was something good like the light bulb or the Declaration of Independence. Therefore those who make a big deal of the bad stuff in the past, like slavery, are Living in the Past and need to Get Over It.For example:
Jim Crow laws were overturned by the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Therefore according to Teflon Theory the Jim Crow period is now Ancient History. It has Absolutely No Effect on how White Americans alive today think and act. None whatsoever. Or not much. So racism is pretty much dead.
Instead of Jim Crow’s effect slowly weakening over time like you would expect, Teflon Theory would have you suppose that it just disappeared like magic one afternoon sometime in the late 1960s. Even though many White Americans alive now were alive back in Jim Crow times. Even though many others were brought up and shaped by those who were alive back then: parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, writers, film directors, television producers, news editors and so on.

I am quite sure no one living in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government made the Fort Laramie treaty with the Sioux Nation or were participants in Custers violation of that treaty. Nor were they alive when President Grant decided it was OK to let settlers and people prospecting for gold tresspass into land promised to the Sioux thereby violating the treaty. No one in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government decided to take the land from the Sioux by military force. No one in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government decided to cut off supplies they promised the Sioux as condition for their surrender after whipping the U.S. Army at The Battle of Little Bighorn. But in 1980, the government of the United States decided reparations were due to the Sioux Nation for what was done to them in the 1800’s. They awarded the Sioux nation 105 million dollars..

Nobody here was alive in 1887 and the damages from that act were continuous. So you guys don't have an argument. Republicans authored an amendment to officially make slavery a constitutionally protected activity. The Republican Party is the party of The Corwin Amendment that would have cemented slavery as a constitutional right.
A Republican president, with the support of the Republican Party, ended reconstruction. The Republican Party is the party of the 1877 Compromise that ended reconstruction and paved the way for Jim Crow.
Once blacks got a foothold in the Republican party and gained some semblance of political equality, white Republicans took steps to purge blacks from leadership positions. The Republican Party is the party of the Lily White movement, a group of Republicans who worked to purge blacks from the party.
Republicans consistently broke promises or ignored issues that affected black people. When blacks got Civil Rights, the Republican Party did not believe that was civil or right and decided that extremism in defense of liberty was no vice. In 1964 the Republican Party turned its back on blacks after nearly 100 years of black support.
Republicans need to stop lying.

punishing someone for something that they have no control of is an injustice
I don't know about that. Enormous wealth was accumulated by rich, White, Southern families and I suspect a good portion of that got passed down though the generations to this very day.
The world is built on injustice.
