He's not vilifying all immigrants though. Also, if you legally immigrated but then overstayed your visa, you're no longer legal. Try overstaying your visa in Canada, for example. You'll typically be deported. The same is true in a lot of Europe.

So, this is about actually enforcing immigration laws. It probably seems alien to a lot of people, since it hasn't been consistently done in about 20 years.

Democrats would probably do a lot better today if they went back to Clinton's populism of 1996. Granted, if they did that, their platform would be remarkably similar to Trump's 2016 platform.
