This bill would have implemented a different punishment for the same crime dependent upon the citizenship status of the offender. That ain't right no matter how bad you want it to be. The bill makes a mockery of common Republican positions. For instance, gun control.

We don't need any more gun laws, just enforce the gun laws already on the books. We don't need any "special" laws targeting illegal immigrants regarding DWI, just enforce the laws on the books. I know in this state if an illegal immigrant is found guilty of DWI they can't start a damn car without first blowing in a blowbox. If they get caught driving without a blowbox they are going to be given free room and board at the jail.

You can't take Trump off the ballot. He hasn't been convicted of any crime, only charged with them. Yet this bill calls for deportation of an illegal immigrant charged with a DWI, not convicted. A clear violation of the fifth amendment.

The Federal government became in the habit of not paying a penny for the costs to the states. Some states said "screw that". There is no Federal jail to hold illegals so it was on the state to do so. Not being able to afford that they quit trying.

That fact that some employers are hiring illegals doesn’t negate the fact that the illegals broke the law. In the case of drunk driving, at least 2 times. Once when they came into the country illegally and again when they drove drunk, probably without a license.

For some strange reason, Democrats don’t have any interest punishing illegal immigrants.
