Electric Cars are faster
OK, bring your electric car to Le Mans, and we’ll see how many laps it can manage in 24 hours. Considering that Le Mans is literally the cutting edge of efficiency, it’s odd isn’t it that nobody is showing up with an electric car. Audi revolutionized the race with Diesel engined race cars. Then revolutionized it again by adding a Hybrid system. Now, the big racing teams all have hybrid systems, but not Diesel. Audi has retired from the race, leaving Porsche and Toyota as the factory teams.
But why if the electric systems are easy and reliable? Because it takes hours to recharge the batteries. That is where electric always falls down. Your electric powered race car might do a hell of a fast lap, or two. Perhaps it even manages a full Stint, say twelve or thirteen laps. Then it’s into the Garage to be recharged while the rest of the field is roaring by.
They can’t change out whole engines, and you can’t change out entire battery packs. So you would be left trickle charging the batteries, and hoping that the system did not catch fire on the back straight. Then your driver could sit in the car for most of his four hour Stint, while the battery is plugged in. Your next driver jumps behind the wheel, and off he goes. Ten or so laps later he’s in the Garage to be charged up. You would get a DNF because you have to have completed something like 90% of the lap count of the leader to be on the board as completed the race at the end.
