I've collected quite a few postcards on the town I was born in, and the nearby city where I lived too (UK). I was given a handful of postcards and one was of Consett near Newcastle. Never seen Consett postcards on eBay before so I listed it. It went for just over £50.

The most I've bid on a postcard was £100, but it went for a small fortune. The other thing is, postcards covered floods of the city back in the 1800's, yet a recent flood a few years ago was put down to climate change 🤔

But I've not bought a postcard for a good year or two.

Huh, I did not know there was a name for such people!

Back in the day I bought a couple thousand at a yard sale for next to nothing. I put them out on the table in the boxes I found them in and sold them for a buck each.

I was amazed how many people were culling through them, it got to the point they were crowding out others wishing to buy my more expensive wares, so I pulled out an unused card table and set it off to the side to get them out of the way.

It got so aggravating I finally took an offer for all of the remaining ones just to get shed of them. I never bought anymore but there was sure some money in them.

They're historic photos of the past. Before cameras, the scenery and buildings were hand drawn so those tend to be prints of the original, but can still have some age to them. Used ones often give a postal age to the postcard, plus, that ever hopefully rare postage stamp still stuck to one.

Postcards can command a lot of money.

Edit - that £100+ postcard I think was in Canada and I think it went for over £200. Coincidentally, the guy that bought it was the father of my neighbour at the time, he was a serious collector. The sale featured in the local paper

Notice the square building on the left opposite side of the road, and the terraced houses on the right.

That square building is still there behind the green lorry, and the terraced houses too. The white cottages obviously demolished and rebuilt on.
