Call it what you want, they would all achieve the same objective, take money away from police departments, which means fewer police and higher crime ratea.

Let's be honest, most of what cops do on a day to day basis has very little to do with "Crime". It's mostly traffic enforcement and breaking up domestic disputes.

The real problem, is of course, that we don't really train cops how to de-escalate situations, or how to deal with the mentally ill. They STILL get it right 99% of the time, but the 1% of the time they get it wrong, it's very ugly.

Yes, the voters here in California will probably approve a measure that would do what is mentioned in the OP.

Some very kind-hearted (and well-protected) liberals feel that jail is no place to put robbers, sucker punchers, looters, rapists, & murderers. Those individuals, we are told, only need love & compassion to change their lives. After all, they are victims of society, not perps.

So let's look at the reality = We asked cops to control Crime, but we decided to NOT spend the money on reducing the underlying causes of crime - Poverty, Addiction, mental illness and the fact it is way to easy to get a gun in this country.

And the cops mostly get it right....

But when they get it wrong, we are outraged, and rightfully so.

So yes, let's reform the police, but let's fix those other problems.
