Why deer are drawn to train tracks, and how Japan is solving the problem with this simple block

The officials for Japan's train companies have had a deer problem. Deer were hanging around trackways and getting run over and derailing trains. They had dozens of expensive solutions, none of which worked.

Then they asked Why? They noticed deer chew on iron a lot in Japan. They have a new solution, and it seems to be working. They put out iron licks.

I mean obviously the rails are kept shiney by train wheels?

Never tried it. I would guess it tastes the same, iron is iron, just a different color.
