It wasn't originally a sport. They used a pole to jump creeks and pasture fences and such without getting wet or going around to the gate. Started in ancient Greece, unsurprisingly.

I pole vaulted once in the hospital. I just had an operation that required a catheter. The next morning, I had a hard on and when I rolled over in my sleep and the catheter tube sticking out jammed into the mattress and up I went. Damn near pole vaulted right out of bed. Of course, back then I told my friends I pole vaulted clear across the room and hit the wall. And that's how I cured myself of the dangerous practice of pole vaulting.
