I grew up in a rural area near a small town in the Tennessee hills. My town had a small population of blacks who lived in a community. I didn't know black people and had no cause to mingle with them. When I was a kid the schools were still segregated and all I knew about Black people was what I was told mostly by people who didn't know anything about Black people either. Then when was 19 Y/O I received a draft notice and went off to fight a bunch of decidedly hostile Asian people doing what I understood to be my duty as an American citizen. Someone from both sides of my family fought in at least one war another as far back as anyone could remember including one ancestor who fought on each side of the Civil War. The one who fought for the North was captured, made POW and sent to Andersonville Prison but survived the war. The one who fought for the South was killed at the battle of Nashville. He owned no slaves and I was always told, and still believe, that he died defending home and family against Northern aggression. When I went to fight my war I carried that same flag because I believed it represented willingness to fight aggression and oppression. And I flew that flag in Vietnam and Cambodia and later in Panama. In the course of fighting a part of that war I lived, worked, fought, and bled alongside Black people in some of the most miserable conditions known to man. And I found out they were merely American men just like me. Some were angles and some were assholes just like White guys. And I outgrew my preconceptions and prejudices against Black people. Many years later I was once more living in the rural Tennessee hills and I raised a daughter who was my baby girl and the focus of my life. She dated Black guys as well as others. When she was about to graduate high school she was in a serious relationship with a Black guy who was an actual African American who was born in Sudan. He was welcome in our home and would have been welcomed into the family except she died. I appears to me that you need to understand that you have no right to decide what any symbol means to someone else. And you would also do well to outgrow your own prejudices and preconceptions. They were charged with unlawfully entering a restricted building, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and degradation of government property.
