What Criteria do you use yourself to judge if you think a movie is a good film or not?

Movie critics can be very biased. Everyone including movie critics have their own opinions of what criteria makes a good movie, what do you personally use?

For me personally these are the criteria I seem to use.

Originality: How different and original the film is from most films.
Examples: 8 1/2 , La Dolce Vita, Citizen Kane, The Big Lebrowski, Rashomon, Pulp Fiction, A Clockwork Orange, Breathless, 2001 A Space Odyessy, Brazil

Deep Themes and Symbolism in the films
Examples: 8/12, La Dolce Vita, Citizen Kane, Brazil, The Big Lebrowsky, A Clockwork Orange, Grapes of Wrath, Gatsby, All The Kings Men, Rashomon

Costumes, Set, Furniture, Surroundings are so far removed from your reality that they draw you back in time or into the future or into Fantasy
Examples: Lord of The Rings, The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Star Trek, Shindler's List, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, Das Boot

Cinematography

Examples: The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, Lord of the Rings, 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, Breathless

Outstanding Acting:
Examples: The Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, La Dolce Vita, 81/2, It's A Wonderful Life, The Silence of the Lambs, 12 Angry Men, Gone With The Wind

I won't go to just any film. I pay attention to who is in it and what the film is about and of course the rating is another factor for me. I like knowing ahead of time what the film consists of as far as swearing, violence, sexual content, etc.

God bless you always!!!

So do I. If there is none, I don't watch it!

My criteria is very simple. "Did I enjoy it?" This is obviously a different standard than the Academy Award people use. Usually their picks are horrible. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". "Some Like it Hot". I don't go in for perversion or social messages.

Too many criteria tonlist in full. Depends on the genre, I prefer non-fiction best. Plot is captivating, well written script,.great acting, thought provoking. I dont like anynmovie with violent against kids or gore. I dont like anything too offensive, designed to shock rather thwn entertain. I miss watching movies, I used love watching movies but dont do so often anymore

Non-fiction movies? There is no such thing.

the storytelling, acting, direction, how well the FX are if they use them and how original it is plays a part, of course entertainment factor without before overly stupid with impossible scenes that don't add to the movie

In the past I only cared about whether or not it was entertaining and well-made. But now I'm more careful about what I put into my mind. I like movies with a good message. I like movies with a good story. And of course the other things mentioned, like cinematography, good acting, originality, etc.

Oh and I might get made fun of for this, but I detest violence... and gory movies. And I hate movies that glorify evil things. I don't care how well-made it is, if it glorifies violence or other evil things, I don't want to watch it.

I can agree with that, I don't watch horror movies at all, not since I was a kid because I was not supposed to watch movies like friday the 13th, halloween, etc
movies like saw and the like I have no interest in seeing pretty young girls getting killed in brutal ways

I never watched any of those faces of death, no interest.

final destination was about the extent of a "death" movie but it has context, well written horror movie, not just some snuff type film

you gotta be a sicko to get entertained by that

Any association with Hollywood is a virtual guarantee that it will be inferior quality --- and big budget hoped for block busters will always be script edited by Langley .

Oppenheimer is a good recent example .
Complete Fake from start to end .
Updated " John Wayne" type lies .

My highest demand is believability.
When watching a movie, ideally, you become emersed in the stories/characters and "forget" you are watching a movie.
To me, this is the single most important achievement regardless of what genre a movie is.
The only way this is achieved properly is all of the pieces of making a movie are all well done - The acting, the story itself, the settings, cinematography - and good characterization.

Usually when I can't get into a movie it is this.
To put it in perspective - imagine if Darth Vader wore pink. How could you possibly get into the movie with something that distracting?
Woke messaging is something that has been ruining movies for the past 5 years - FINALLY - after Hollywood is near financial collapse, filmmakers have got the "message" themselves - no one wants to see it.

Is it entertaining escapism.
Escapism Yes!

The ability to completely forget yourself , escaping in a film, becoming the characters in the film is what I enjoy too and I think it is a sign of a well made film!

Films every time I watch them I just completely seem to escape in them:

Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Humphrey Bogart films like Casablanca, Lord of the Rings, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Wuthering Heights, It's A Wonderful Life, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Gatsby, Treasure Island, The Grapes of Wrath, Psycho, Star Wars.

I think good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's very easy to compose a premise, but it's often hard to move it along to the middle. It's even harder to move it to the end.

I can't really watch movies any more. Since the arrival of TV series that are, essentially, the books of the screen, where you can get to know characters better, stories have time to play out, I watch a movie and I'm like "it's finished already?"

true, most movies are 2 hours, a show like andor for instance had 24 episodes at roughly 45 minutes or so, that would be a 20 hour movie!

even LOTR was not that long......around 10 hours total.

basically andor had more content than every star wars movie combined and then some

To answer the question in the title, I call a movie a "good" movie is the script makes sense and the decisions made by the characters make sense. Casablanca is the best example I can think of where this is true. No conflict is artificially generated. Ilsa found out that Victor was alive and didn't go with Rick. Louie (who is essential for any film in my opinion) remains neutral up until the very end. Even Strasser's actions all made sense to me. One thing I don't like about movies in general is that everyone who has a speaking role (exaggeration there) seem to need their storyline wrapped up in a neat little bow. I like how Rick turned over his bar to his rival so you didn't have to see how things ended up for Sam or Pierre. Just a very well crafted movie from start to finish. Now, add the great acting, the subtle humor, the content, and the passion it generates when the entire bar sings La Marseillaise and you have what I think is a great movie.

Now, I can enjoy a film that has a weak script and bad acting (Death Race) and I can abhor a supposedly great film--OSCAR winner--(American Beauty) as well so I may not be the best yardstick.

In some movies the storytelling does most of the work. In others the story is an equal or lesser part of a team, with music, visual effects, etc. There's no set formula or list of ingredients for making a movie work.
