It says they will be closing down the network on Tuesday for up to several hours in my area for upgrades

I never heard of this before

My ISP does that occasionally for maintenance and the internet will work intermittently for several hours. They do it in the middle of the night around 2AM to 6 AM when internet traffic is low to cause as little service disruption as possible.

Most people never even notice it because they are sleeping.

Reminds me of the modem for my first computer. A TRS-80.

Reminds me of the modem for my first computer. A TRS-80.

I used to repair those and the associated terminals back in the 70s and 80s. I could whistle up the tones and make the modem handshake.
